Nollywood Actress, Mercy Johnson Okojie has thrown weight behind the need for Nigerians to brace up their reading culture for personal and national development.

Mercy Johnson made this known at the 1st International conference of Africanity Scholars Network held at University of Nigeria, Nsukka

The actress, who insisted that reading is a must, agreed that education as a leveler mustn’t come solely by reading but also through other means.

Commenting on the divergent views on the Watching and Reading culture, Mercy Johnson said:

“As much as we devote our time to watching (movies) if we devote that much time to reading, there will be a lot of progress. The essence of life is about balance for the success story to emerge”

She explained that reading has gone beyond the traditional book to online noting that virtually all you need to broaden your horizon and compete favourably in the international community are in the books and online.

Speaking on the theme of the conference: “Knowledge loss, bondage and regrets in post-contact societies”, Mercy Johnson said that acquiring knowledge should be done properly”

According to her “issues we are having still relate to one thing: “Knowledge”. People still need to free themselves from the bondage of not acquiring knowledge and acquiring it proper. Because it is only when you acquire that knowledge either way formally or informally that you progress and understand the essence of your existence or the truth about life and the truth about success.
