The alarming rate of drug abuse among children, teenagers and the youths has become a source of worry in recent time.
Understanding the consequences of this menace has therefore resulted in several awareness and initiatives like never before both from government and civil societies on national and international basis.
This explains the  theme for 2019 children’s day celebration  tagged “Drug abuse among children: addressing the challenges” which was carefully selected to beam a searchlight on drug abuse as a threat to the nation’s future.
Some Children Bright Akintan, Heritage Mercy and Favour Akintade who spoke with Radio Nigeria in Akure, the Ondo state capital  challenged the government to be decisive in putting up policies that will address the menace.
They also called on their parents to rise to salvage their future by giving them more attention while also cautioning others engaging  in it.
While speaking on the future implication of drug abuse, the pastor in charge of Redeemed Christian church of God, Ondo Province 9, Pastor Christopher Sule urged teenagers to do away with whatever could destroy their beautiful future.
The Director Child Development, Ondo state Ministry of Women Affairs, Mr Niyi Ogunleye who highlighted the wrong use of Tramadol, sniffing of faeces and combination of other harmful  substances by  children said children wrongfully use them to boost self esteem and confidence.
He pointed out that drug  abuse had resulted in  increasing crime rate  and insanity in the society.
On his part, a Civil society Activist, Mr Martin-Mary Falana, indicted many parents for shying away from  their responsibilities  to the detriment of the well being of their kids.
Mr Mary – Falana also called on government to include lessons on anti drug abuse in school curriculum so that they can be well sensitized on the dangers of the act.
Children’s day is celebrated on 27th day of May every year to celebrate the value of children and draw attention to their plight.

  1. Some parents shy away from this responsibility because they themselves are guilty of drug-related offences. The change begins with us- with me. A solid home is a consolidation to the society.
    A job well done!
